Hidden in the misty hills of Sintra and wrapped in 545 acres of lush nature, Penha Longa Resort is a peaceful, five-star retreat that feels like a well-kept secret — despite being just 30 minutes from Lisbon and only 15 minutes from the beach.
As expats based in Portugal, we’re lucky enough to know just how special this corner of the country is — and Penha Longa is easily one of our favourite luxury escapes. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a wellness weekend, a golf retreat, or a family holiday with space to breathe, this resort hits all the right notes.
The Setting
Set within a protected national park, Penha Longa (meaning “Long Rock”) was once a 14th-century monastery — and today, the original chapel and ruins still stand peacefully on the grounds. But the heart of the resort is the Ritz-Carlton hotel, combining understated elegance with Portuguese charm. Winding driveways, ancient pines, and distant mountain views give it a fairy-tale feel that’s pure Sintra.

The Rooms
The rooms and suites are spacious, with large balconies that look out over the golf course, mountains, or peaceful gardens. Interiors are refined but comfortable, with plush beds, marble bathrooms, and thoughtful amenities. If you’re celebrating something special, we highly recommend booking one of the corner suites — the extra space and panoramic views are worth it.

Dining
Penha Longa is a culinary destination in its own right. There are nine dining experiences, including the Michelin-starred LAB by Sergi Arola, which offers a beautifully creative tasting menu in a moody, intimate setting.
For something more relaxed, Midori serves elevated Japanese-Portuguese fusion, and Arola (also by Sergi Arola) brings fun tapas-style dishes with a vibrant terrace vibe. There’s also Aqua, the seasonal poolside restaurant, plus casual dining at B Lounge and Il Mercato for Italian.
And yes — the breakfast buffet is everything you hope it will be: fresh juices, pastéis de nata, eggs made to order, and views over the grounds to start your day right.

Wellness & Activities
The spa at Penha Longa is one of the best in Portugal — a true sanctuary in the forest with a luxurious indoor pool, sauna, steam rooms, and a comprehensive list of treatments using Natura Bissé and Aromatherapy Associates. The outdoor meditation labyrinth and garden pavilions add a peaceful, almost spiritual element to the wellness experience.
For those wanting to stay active, the 18-hole championship golf course is a highlight (and often hosts professional tournaments), while the fitness centre, tennis courts, hiking trails, and horse riding options offer plenty to fill your days. There’s even a kids’ club if you’re traveling with family.

A Perfect Base for Exploring
Penha Longa is perfectly located for day trips to the colourful palaces and mysterious forests of Sintra, the surfy vibes of Cascais, or the culture and cuisine of Lisbon. It’s ideal if you want a base that feels like a countryside retreat, but still want access to the coast and city.
